Day 29
30 mins editing + 15 mins planning + 1 hr planned writing
Today is a reflective passage, asking what we have discovered about ourselves as writers over the course of the 30 Days. Jacqui emphasises the uniqueness of expression each writer has, and how that must be recognised and preserved. If we want to go deeper into it, we can look beyond what we write to think about why we write and who we want to be as writers.
Exercise
- 1,000 words (I added 30 mins editing + 15 minutes planning): write something that feels true
My response
- As a writer, I want to be an entertainer primarily. I would also like to be a guide; for my characters and situations to provoke thought and comparisons in the reader, which might help them navigate or develop their own lives. That’s what other people’s stories have done for me.
- I would like my writing journey to begin with strengthening my commitment to it, and improving my execution of it. This is a matter of repetition but also confidence and intention; to know what I’m doing and why.
- I will leave my reflection on what this course has prompted me to discover to the end of the blog, where I’ll do a dedicated review of the whole.
- Still working consecutively, the scene “which felt true” was one where the main character decides to take one path rather than another early on in the novel. She decides based on her instincts and desires, rather than logic and convention. This will turn out to be both an uplifting and dangerous thing for her to do. We will watch her go into a world we are happy to peak into, even if we would not want to follow her there in reality.
